Research focus is on the contexts of variation in the English language, including in Baltimore. Co-author of Understanding English Language Variation in U.S. Schools (2011) and We Do Language: English Language Variation in the Secondary English Classroom (2014), and co-editor of Data Collection in Sociolinguistics: Methods and Applications (2018, 2ndedition) and Rural Voices: Language, Identity and Social Change across Place (2018). Co-Principal Investigator of an NSF grant to study the role of language for culturally and linguistically diverse students in K-12 STEM classrooms. Chair of the Ethics Committee of the Linguistic Society of America as well as member of the LSA’s Nominating Committee and Committee on Ethnic Diversity in Linguistics. Editorial advisory board member of three journals, Language & Linguistics Compass, Voice & Speech Review, andAmerican Speech, for which she also previously served a 10-year term as associate editor.
